Meeting scheduled for spring growers

 

A spring growers meeting to discuss compliance with labor rules and regulations is set for May 14 at the State Farmers Market, 3483 Charleston Highway, West Columbia.  The meeting is at 9 a.m. at the Phillips Market Center.

Representatives from the United State Department of Labor will present information important to farmers and growers and the operations they run. The meeting is open to all growers, labor industry professionals and agribusiness industry representatives. The session will include a question and answer time.

The City of Sumter is joining communities across the U.S. during National Police Week—May 12-18—to honor and remember law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers left behind.

 

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The week in which that day falls is also known as Police Week.

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) - Nursing women at a major Army headquarters in South Carolina don't have to hide in a rest room if they want to breast-feed their babies or express milk for their young.

Women soldiers and civilian employees as well as spouses visiting the headquarters are celebrating the very low-tech room. This $100 million command center now has a room set up exclusively to support nursing mothers, just as moms everywhere celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday.

South Carolinians participating in the United States Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA’s) sixth National Prescription Drug Take-Back event on Saturday, April 27, 2013, turned in 4,701 pounds of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal at sites set up throughout the state. This exceeded the last take back total in September, 2012, which was 3,539 pounds.

On May 9th four non-profit organizations in South Carolina that work with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations joined together to participate in the 1st national Give OUT Day for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender  Queer community (LGBTQ).

Get ready for South Carolina’s Largest Baby Shower! On Saturday, May 11th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. drop off baby supplies to select Walmart locations in Columbia, Sumter and Florence. The supplies will then be donated directly to the Pregnancy Resource Center in your area to help expecting mothers in need.
