Cheapest gas in U.S. helps boost holiday travel

An estimated 437,000 South Carolina motorists - a 3.3% increase over last year - are expected to begin traveling Thursday as the summer travel season begins with the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

South Carolina has the cheapest gasoline in the nation at $3.34 cents a gallon, with the lowest average price in Greenville at $3.29 and the highest in tourist-centric Charleston at $3.40 a gallon.

On Thursday, May 24, Superintendent Randolph D. Bynum, Sr. will provide General Vincent K. Brooks and ten additional representatives from the Third Army/US Army Central with an abbreviated tour of Sumter School District.

Memorial Day Ceremony To Be Held at General George Mabry Memorial Park on May 28th

On Monday, May 28, The Sumter County Veteran's Association will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony at General George Mabry Memorial Park. The park is located just west of Sumter, prior to Shaw Air Force Base.

The ceremony will begin at 11 A. M. The Keynote Speaker this year will be Vincent K. Brooks, Lt. Gen. USA, 3rd Army Commander.

Twenty-eight S.C. Counties Awarded Grants to Fight Obesity

Funds from the national Community Transformation Grant were awarded recently to twenty-eight counties in the Palmetto State. Community partners in each county will work together to create healthier communities by increasing options for physical activity and healthy eating.

SC gas cheapest in nation

CHARLESTON, SC (AP) - There's good news for motorists in South Carolina leading up to the first busy travel weekend of the summer season. Gasoline in South Carolina is the cheapest in the nation.

Tom Crosby of AAA Carolinas says that as of Monday morning, the average price of a gallon of gas was $3.35. That's down 8 cents a gallon from a week ago.

Investigators short on clues in deadly home invasion

SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS)- The Sumter County Sheriff's Office doesn't have much to go on with the investigation of a deadly home invasion Friday night.

Sheriff's Deputies say a man kicked in the door of a home on McLeary Lane and forced his way in. As the woman living in the home hid with her kids in a bedroom, she told investigators she heard two shots.

Deputies investigating shooting at nightclub

SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Sumter County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting at a Broad St. nightclub early Sunday morning.

Deputies were called to Club Miami on Broad Street in Sumter at about 4:30 Sunday morning where a man had been shot in the chest.

The victim was taken to the hospital where deputies say he will need surgery. The victim's name has not been released.

The first arriving deputies chased the suspects, who drove off. The suspects crashed near West Dial St. and Antelope Dr. and deputies managed to catch one suspect.
