Sumter Iris Festival

Sumter's Iris Festival is South Carolina's oldest continuous festival and is consistently ranked among the top festivals in the Southeast. 


The 3-day festival includes concerts, an arts and crafts show, a flower show, a quilt show, car shows, and a number of contests and children's activities.  The fun begins the evening before the festival, with the annual Crowning of The King & Queen followed by the Taste at the Gardens, featuring great music and great food from some of the area's leading restaurants and caterers.

SC State Museum Receives Collection of Historic Transistor Radios

 

These days, an iPod with two ear buds typically provides portable music for the young and young-at-heart.

Half a century ago, however, it was one plug in the ear, and the other end of the wire ran to what was then the latest thing in electronics – a transistor radio.

The South Carolina State Museum has received a large collection of these iconic electronics, along with another type of radio that once gathered music and information from around the world – the short wave.

The Sumter County Library presents two Sizzling Summer Movies. "Man on Wire." 

The movie will be shown on Saturday, June 8th at 3pm, and "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" will be shown Saturday, July 13th at 3pm. Screenings take place at the Main Library and are free to the public.

Meeting scheduled for spring growers

 

A spring growers meeting to discuss compliance with labor rules and regulations is set for May 14 at the State Farmers Market, 3483 Charleston Highway, West Columbia.  The meeting is at 9 a.m. at the Phillips Market Center.

Representatives from the United State Department of Labor will present information important to farmers and growers and the operations they run. The meeting is open to all growers, labor industry professionals and agribusiness industry representatives. The session will include a question and answer time.

South Carolina State Museum announces "Between the Springmaid Sheets" exhibit

The South Carolina State Museum’s new art exhibit Between the Springmaid Sheets will be the occasion for an afternoon of fun activity on Saturday, May 18.  

The action begins at 3 p.m. with a gallery tour of the exhibit, which uses art to chronicle the rise of Springs Cotton Mills as a major player in textile industry after World War II.  The company’s good fortunes were chiefly due to the marketing savvy of Col.
