Local residents have an opportunity to score big points for basketball courts in the area with the simple click of a mouse. Burton Packs Park and St. Anna’s Park have been named as finalist in the Sprite Spark Parks Project for South Carolina, Region 2, and are now eligible to receive a $15,000 grant to refurbish basketball courts.
The two parks were selected as finalists by a judging panel and the winner will be determined by a month-long online vote. Residents have until September 30, to log on to www.spritesparkparks.com/pigglywiggly, to vote DAILY for their favorite park to receive a grant to fund items such as new rims, backboards, resurfacing and art installations. The park that gains the most online support will be awarded the grant.
The grant is made possible through a national partnership between the National Recreation and Park Agency and The Coca-Cola Company. In South Carolina, the Sprite Spark Parks Project has teamed up with local grocer, Piggly Wiggly, enhancing the overall effort to improve communities by providing support for these important play spaces and giving young people safe, fun places to come together in a positive, active way.
“We really appreciate the corporate commitment and involvement”, said Jeff Caton, Director, City of Columbia Parks and Recreation. “We’re excited about the impact this award will have on the winning community, particularly the children.”
The winning park will be announced during the first week of October 2012.
