Cardholders to receive free admission first weekend of Dec.

Bank of America is giving bank cardholders free admission to some of the most exciting cultural venues nationwide.

Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2  Bank of America will offer cardholders free access to more than 150 cultural institutions in 91 cities across the United States.

In Columbia, residents and visitors can enjoy free admission to EdVenture Children’s museum.

Red Cross Reminds Public to Send Holiday Cards for Heroes by Dec. 7

The December 7 deadline is fast approaching for people to send holiday greetings to men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces through “Holiday Mail for Heroes,” an American Red Cross program.

 

Once the Red Cross receives the cards that are sent in by the public, Pitney Bowes Inc. scans them to ensure safety and security. Red Cross volunteers then sort and deliver them to military installations, in VA and military hospitals and to veteran’s organizations in the United States and overseas.

118 volunteers from South Carolina have deployed to the Northeast

Over the weekend, the local Red Cross deployed five more volunteers to assist with Sandy disaster relief in the Northeast.  Since this massive relief effort began, the Red Cross has deployed a total of 118 volunteers and eight feeding trucks from South Carolina.  Additional volunteers remain on stand-by and will deploy as needed.  

 

The Red Cross has been helping people since before Sandy made landfall and will continue to help for weeks and months to come as families get back on their feet.

On Saturday, November 17 at 7pm in front of the State House in Columbia, Palmetto Transgender Association, along with SC Equality and the Harriet Hancock LGBT Center will be holding a candlelight reading of the names of those killed world-wide by trans-phobic violence the previous 12 months.


Scheduled speakers include: Ryan Wilson, Executive Director of SC Equality; Lester Franzen, President of the Board, Harriet Hancock LGBT Center; Amy Garbati of Charleston Area Transgender Support, and Rev. Tiffany Adams.

Sumter Police Department to Sponsor 2nd Annual “Mile for a Meal” Hunger Awareness Walk

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, mouths are beginning to water with thoughts of turkey and all the trimmings. Many in our community however, will struggle to find any food at all. On Monday, November 19, 2012 the Sumter Police Department will sponsor Mile for a Meal, a community walking event and food drive to benefit local Sumter food pantries for the less fortunate.

Amazon Fulfillment in Columbia announced a donation of more than $20,000 in grants and Kindle devices to military support organization across the Midlands of South Carolina on Monday.

This is a part of Amazon’s continuing national commitment to members of the United States military and their families.
