SC Consumer Affairs: Watch out for fake charities

Columbia, SC…With the recent tragedies in Boston and Texas, the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) is urging consumers to be wary of scammers who pose as charities.

Scam artists follow the headlines and often tailor their fraud attempts to current events in an effort to profit from consumer kindness. As SCDCA saw with the Gulf Coast Oil Spill, we anticipate scammers will contact consumers in an effort to solicit money for phony charities to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings or West, Texas fire.

Not everyone is expected to like one another, but one man took his dislike for a colleague to the extreme when he locked two workers inside a recycling center, according to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Police release photos of man wanted for stealing purse

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - Sumter Police have released photos of a man who they hope the public can help them identify in a purse snatching case.

Police say just before noon Saturday, April 13th, a man forcibly grabbed the purse of a 75-year-old woman at Savannah Square Shopping Center on Pinewood Road.  The victim told investigators she was walking in the parking lot when the man got out of a parked car, grabbed the purse from her arm, and drove away.

Police say the woman suffered a minor hand injury, but she did not need medical treatment.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America To Hold Rally At The Statehouse

Only eleven weeks after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America has decided to hold a rally at the SC Statehouse in Columbia on March 2nd at 10:30 a.m.

The peaceful rally will allow parents and other supporters across the state to reach out to SC legislators about demanding more gun regulation in order to prevent gun violence.

Speakers are still not finalized, but will include: A Columbia mother directly impacted by gun violence when her daughter was murdered by a stolen gun; a Lowcountry public school teacher worki
