South Carolina Receives Mixed Results on Nation’s Report Card

While South Carolina eighth graders improved their scores in reading and mathematics, fourth graders’ performance in reading slightly declined and slightly improved in mathematics on the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).  Ranked by scale score, South Carolina is 39th in fourth grade reading (no change from 2009), 38th in eighth grade reading (improvement of 4 spots from 2009), 37th in fourth grade mathematics (improvement of 1 spot from 2009), and 34th in eighth grade mathematics (decline of 1 spot from 2009).

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced on Friday the award of $3,438,118 for 9 grants to colleges in South Carolina to enhance their capacity to serve low and middle-income African American students. Nationwide, the Education Department is awarding $24,601,758 to 62 colleges.

Clyburn Announces $3.5 Million GEAR UP Grant for Corridor of Shame Schools

Sixth District Congressman and House Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $3.5 million Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Program to provide partnerships and services at high-poverty middle schools mostly along the I-95 corridor.  The South Carolina Commission for Higher Education will administer the grant that is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

South Carolina baseball has landed the top recruiting class in the country as announced by Collegiate Baseball on Tuesday.  The Gamecock newcomers include seven players that have been drafted as well as several standouts from both the high school and junior college ranks.
