Sumter Police Detectives arrested two people on drug charges following a shooting investigation.

According to police, on Jan. 14, officers conducting a follow-up investigation into a recent shooting incident executed a search warrant at a residence located at 19 Harris Street in Sumter.

During the search of the residence for the weapon used in the shooting detectives discovered approximately one pound of marijuana in the residence, police say.

The report said Detectives with the Sumter Police Department’s Narcotics and Vice Unit responded and continued the search of the residence where they also discovered and seized over $7,000.00 in cash and other items related to illegal drug sales. 

Occupants of the residence 41-year-old Kelvin Kennedy and 38-year-old Tonya Peterson were arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, report stated.

Police say at the time of his arrest, Kennedy was out of jail on bond for attempted murder after allegedly shooting a 45-year-old male in the leg at a residence in the 200 block of Brooklyn Street on Jan. 10. 

Kennedy and Peterson are currently being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
